The lines are spaced wide enough for the child to write. I also like that it goes from letters to words to sentences. So, while this is a bit expensive, this should last you about 3 years.

The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury
If you can only buy 1 book for your kindergarten child, buy this. It is a compilation of stories to enrich the young listener's mind. The stories are long and it is a good transition from picture books to chapter books (for read-aloud) since there are fewer pictures.
